Sensiba San Filippo is participating in the 2018 East Bay Kidney Walk happening on Sunday, June 3rd in San Ramon. The Kidney Walk is a fun 5k walk, open to family, friends and even pets! Join team Kicking Assets and Taking Names in walking to fight kidney disease.
At SSF, our community participation follows our people’s passions and interest. As a firm we are walking to support our Audit Parnter, Frank Balestreri’s wife, Joanna. Here is Frank’s story.
Nearly 10 years ago, my wife received a live donor kidney from our sister-in-law. It was a day that forever changed both of their lives and brought them closer together.
My wife Joanna has battled kidney related issues for most of her life. Growing up, while other kids were looking forward to breaks from school, her life was filled with several trips to the Children’s Hospital for multiple surgeries. Fortunately, it was what we affectionately refer to as “bad plumbing” and not full on kidney disease. Her Doctors stabilized her for many years with the equivalent of 1/3 of a kidney. Unfortunately with age, her kidney function began to decline and she was facing having to go onto dialysis. If you don’t know, while dialysis does help, it is also very invasive and has a big impact on quality of life.
When faced with potentially having to go on to dialysis, the Doctors began educating us about live donor transplantation. It was daunting. How do you go about asking someone to give up something like that for you? At UCSF, they walked us through the entire process, including the screening of potential donors. This is not something that happens overnight. The Doctors and staff at UCSF were nothing short of amazing. Ultimately, after testing many people, our sister-in-law was determined to be the best match. She saved my wife’s life.
I am very thankful to the firm for supporting the Kidney Foundation and their mission to save lives.
