California workers seeking paid sick leave can check their eligibility themselves. The CA Dept. of Industrial Relations has created a tool that workers can use to determine if they qualify for 2021 COVID-19 supplemental paid sick leave under CA law. Supplemental paid sick leave for 2021 COVID-19 is available only for employees and doesn’t apply to independent contractors. The 2021 leave is for up to 80 hours and is separate from other COVID-19-related leave taken in 2020. This law for 2021 paid sick leave took effect on March 29, 2021. It’s retroactive to Jan. 1, 2021, and ends on Sept. 30, 2021.
